IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PLANT CARE AND WEATHER:
All plants will arrive directly from the greenhouse and may face a little “shock” as they adjust to being outdoors. With overnight temperatures still fluctuating for the next couple of weeks, it is best to wait to plant your plants when nighttime temperatures hold at 50 degrees or higher.
As you wait, you can help your plants, hanging baskets and patio pots acclimate by doing the following:
Place your plants outside during the day and water as needed. Pay attention to sun preferences of plants. A plant that prefers shady conditions should not be placed in direct sun.
If/when overnight temperatures dip below 50 degrees, either bring them into the garage (setting them on cardboard or layers of newspaper rather than the cold cement floor) or have your plants elevated off the ground and covered with a sheet overnight. A plastic tarp will not act as a good insulator from cold evening temps.
Some plants are particularly sensitive to the cold and will perform best if not planted until soil temperatures warm above 50 degrees. This is usually by the third week of May in the Twin Cities. These cold sensitive plants from the North Oaks Garden Club Plant Sale include:
All hanging baskets and patio pots
Basil (sweet and Thai)
